Sings louder uncaged in streets Proving a dream deferred does
Explode.
Yes, we have found the answer To a question that
Never
Should
Have
Needed
Asking.
But Hughes did Because it did Need asking.
Now we know...
The caged bird doesn’t just sing
It screams louder than a dream Deferred exploding It screams louder than a dream Deferred exploding It screams louder than a dream Deferred exploding It screams louder than...
And so on, and so on, and so on...
How many times did we need to find This out?
One should have been more than enough. Now we have moved so far past one We are spinning right back around to
One. The answer: We are One.
Until we sing that word together Until we sing that word together Until we sing that word together
We just defer the dream Again To watch It explode; Then finding the mockingbird Too much for our heart, kill it.
So touching and evocatively passionate. The repetition in the lines really brings the point home behind this poem. Just wow. This is so impactful, powerful, and beautifully penned. Excellent writing as always!

A very powerful poem and recitation. Hughes’ dream deferred exploding has been in my mind as well.

Thank you Liz. It has taken a while for me to figure out what I needed to say; Hughes poetry, long a love of mine, opened a window.

True, true. I have begun reading a compilation from 1968 that sat for too long on my shelf: Black Voices.
