Stephen Fuller *** Poetry, Essays

The Silence Rumbled, or the poem written in response to the Go Dog Go Tuesday prompt written while eating a chocolate croissant.

The silence that rumbled in my heart
Seeks solace, concocts words in verse
For a layered pastry filled with bitter-sweet

Chocolate. I am the butter spread on the dough
Left overnight to rise. We will bake off to paper
Thin crispness and be a flaky morsel

To devour. Do not doubt the preparation.
Do not doubt the hard work. Not by chance
Does life offer a dessert to plate up.
Yes, devour

The bittersweet chocolate folded in layers
Of risen, buttered dough; the time, the ingredients —
Perfection. I will be the butter, you, the dough.

So the silence in my heart rumbled until
At last, spoken, it gave birth to the boy
Left behind. A boy at last found, at last… heard.

Part One of a trilogy of poems written for this weeks Level UP prompts.
